Chapter Nine

“Someone found out Gregory talked to us.” Kat’s voice sounded tight, a few notes higher than her natural tone.

She was scared, and Viktor couldn’t blame her. But it was important they didn’t panic now. It was important they chose their next move wisely. “You don’t know that.”

“What else could have happened? Grown men don’t get hit by trucks. Not unless the truck was gunning for him. Or someone pushed him.”

Now that was a possibility. “Who? Jabar?”

“He was the last person who was with him.” She slapped her palms down on her thighs. “Come on, Viktor. It’s too much of a coincidence, isn’t it? You just forced him to tell you what he knows, and an hour later he’s lying dead in the street?”

He didn’t want to jump to conclusions, rush off half cocked. Yet he had to admit, Kat was right. It was too much of a coincidence. Far too much. “Maybe someone at Francine’s recognized me. Or Warren figured out who I was, told someone.”

Kat’s eyes grew even wider. Instead of calming her, he’d frightened her more. “So they know you’re alive?”

In the backseat, Daniel’s fast, neighing cry grew louder.

“Maybe. Maybe not.” He had to calm down, calm her down, calm them all down. He had to think. Ahead the traffic rolled on, painfully slow.

Kat unbuckled her safety belt and ducked over the seat. After a few seconds, Daniel’s crying stopped, replaced by the light sound of sucking.

Kat returned to her seat and leaned toward Viktor. “If they know you’re alive, they’re going to pull out all the stops. For the baby, they could take their time. Send a couple of people. Get him eventually. He couldn’t hurt them right away. He wasn’t capable of hurting them for years. But if they know you’re alive…they’re going to send an army.”

She was right. They would send an army. At this point, he was the only one who could hurt them. The only one who could rally the citizens of Rasnovia against them. They needed him dead, and they would hit fast and hard.

And if Kat and Daniel were with him, they’d be caught in the crossfire.

His throat tightened. His head felt light as another dose of adrenaline slammed into his bloodstream.

“How long before they track us down?”

“I don’t know. We don’t even know if Gregory recognized me, or who he might have told.”

“How do we find out?”

He needed someone to ask questions. Someone in the know. Someone right here, right now. Someone like Flint.

Damn.

But wait. Flint wasn’t the only one. He had an idea. He hated to drag anyone else into this, but if Gregory had recognized his voice and told someone, he didn’t have much choice. “Kat, listen to me.”

He kept his eyes on the taillights ahead, but he could feel her focus return to his face.

“I’m going to stop the car. I want you to take Daniel and get into Taylor’s car.”

“Taylor’s car? Why?”

He’d rather not tell her, rather not open his idea to debate. “She said she has a state-of-the-art alarm on her house.
